BRINGING IDEAS TO LIFE
Our design department provides full service Illustration; 3D modelling, graphics and digital design that will take your ideas and make them come to life. Working closely with our clients, our team utilizes their most important asset – imagination. Whether it’s for looking the charm and whimsy of a Parade Float to the inspiring Calgary Public Library Early Learning Centres or our continued collaboration with such long time clients as the Calgary Zoo and Calgary Stampede, our designers bring along a varied history capable of making your visions a reality.
Our lead designer, Ji-Eun Lee, has a background in Environmental Design and Interior Design in both Canada and South Korea. Her enthusiasm is focused on integrated design using digital technologies with analogue sensibilities through both 2D and 3D applications. Her creative tools range from hand sketching that quickly explores ideas to digital methods such as Adobe Suites, SketchUp, Rhino and Grasshopper that utilizes a parametric design approach.
Bi-annually, F&D partners with Mount Royal University to offer an internship for soon-to-be graduates of their interior design program. These students earn work experience hours toward their degree while they are mentored in designing for specialty construction projects. Some of the experience they will have at F&D includes material selection and specification, designing to a budget, working directly with clients, and ensuring their ideas are unique but also practical.
Most of our projects that come out of the design department then head to the F&D Drafting Department for technical drafting and refinement. This ensures that the pieces are all structurally sound while still meeting the original design intent. If the client already has a completed design, the project may go directly into the drafting department. Draftspeople will then specify the location and size of framing as required, types of attachments, or even how pieces break apart for shipping. When necessary, drafting may be sent to a structural engineer for further review and approval. Our drafting department works with a variety of programs including AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, SketchUp, Draftsight, and Photoshop.
